How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob is able of doing so much more than just unlocking and locking your car. It's also an advanced anti-theft tool with specialized technology that can communicate with your vehicle to help in preventing theft.

What happens when the battery of your key fob is dead? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team have all the answers.

How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and functionality compared to a traditional manual key. However, they require batteries that will eventually get worn out and need to be replaced. If your Volvo key fob has begun to work intermittently, that's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need replacing soon.

You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries by following a few simple steps. Choose a clean, dry surface to work on. Make a list of all the tools you'll need. Find the battery's hatch, and then open it with the flathead, a coin, or a similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to protect the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery in the socket after the older one is removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it is seated in all of the clips. Slide the cover towards the key-ring until it becomes loose and is able to slide off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade that is hidden within. This can be used to unlock your car from the driver's door if you have lost or damaged your key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with keyfobs that can do more than just unlock and lock the doors. They can also perform other functions such as summoning or auto parking the vehicle. The latest Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine via the key fob buttons. But what exactly is it that works?

First, locate an area of clean work surface on which you can lay out all the essential items needed for this project. Lay the fob on the surface, with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Use a flathead or coin, or another similar tool to open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This could cause the fob to stop functioning properly.

Once the hatch has been opened, place the battery in its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing up. Once the clips are locked in place, replace the battery cover and then reassemble the fob.

Pressing the unlock button one time will deactivate the alarm and unlock the driver door. Pressing it a second time will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during an extremely hot day or to let fresh air in before climbing behind the wheel. If you'd like to do more than that, the keyfob can be used to activate the ERS system, which will start the climate control system of the vehicle and allow it to warm or cool the vehicle to desired temperature settings when the vehicle is parked.

How to change the battery

If your key fob no longer locks or unlocks your car it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced by using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that used to house the backup/emergency metal ignition key. Insert the blade of a screwdriver or prybar tool into this slot and gently pull the back of the fob. Once the fob has been opened you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery and snap the fob.

Note: Some older Volvos have a different battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter less than a CR2032 battery, and you must be careful with the placement of your replacement.

How to Unlock the Key Blade that is Hidden Key Blade

Volvo's key fobs have advanced in recent years. They're more than just a remote for locking and starting your car; they can also lower your windows and give you an emergency boost. You will first need to master the use of your key fob to maximize its potential.

Your key fob has the transponder chip programmed to your Volvo. When you insert it into the ignition barrel, an antenna reads the code and compares it with the one in your vehicle's start inhibitor module. If the codes do not match, the car will not start. This is a vital anti-theft device that stops your Volvo car from starting if you select the wrong key.

If you lose your keys and you lose it, you must bring it to a dealership to get it replaced and your car programmed. This process can take between 5 and 10 days and will cost you a lot of money. However, there is a way to save some of the cost by doing the programming at home. You can find the necessary information in your owner's manual or on the internet. First, remove the non-logo and logo covers from your key fob. Then lay it on a flat surface. Locate the grey button on the upper right-hand corner of the fob. Press it down. This will allow the cover to open and reveal the CR 2032 3V battery.
